Where can I find information about a specific parish?
To open the history for a particular parish, click on the 'Index' button at the top right hand corner of any page in the site, or on the 'Index' tab on any of the main site pages*. This will open the Parish Index page. Click on the parish name from the list provided. This will bring you to the heritage site for that parish. All of the information that we have gathered for the parish is available there.

Use the navigation buttons on the left of the page to bring you to the relative section. (If you are looking at the frameless version of the site, the navigation buttons do not appear. Instead links are provided at the top of the parish introduction page.)

Alternatively, if you are looking for a particular person or feature of a parish, click on the 'Search' button at the top right hand corner of any page in the site (or the 'Search' tab on any of the main site pages*). This will open the Search page. Here, you will find options to search by parish name, church name, graveyard name, Holy Wells, or famous people. Choose the name of the person or feature from the drop down menus provided. Click on 'Go' to be taken directly to the parish containing that information.

Where can I find out which priests served in a parish?
The list of priests for each parish is available by clicking on the 'Priests' button in the navigation panel of each Parish History. If you are looking at the frameless version of a parish history, click on the 'Priests' link at the top of the page.

How were the lists of priests compiled?
The lists of Priests from 1704 to 1836 are compiled from information gained in Begley's History of the Diocese of Limerick Vol. III page 598. The remaining years are compiled from the Catholic Directories. Information contained in a directory of any given year refers to what happened the previous year. For example, if a priest is recorded in the 1954 directory as being in a particular parish, this would mean that he was actually there in 1953.

How were the lists of townlands and derivations compiled?
The list of townlands was compiled using the following criteria:

Firstly, we tried to obtain a list of the townlands of each parish from the local Parish Priest or local historian. As priests are moved from parish to parish, some priests would not know all the townlands in their parish and when this was the case, we asked local historians for the information.

Secondly, where we were unable to obtain a list of townlands for a parish, we turned to a local history of that parish. These are listed in the Bibliography section. We also used John O’Donovan’s 'Field Name Books of the City & County of Limerick (1839-40)' to compile the lists of townlands.

Thirdly, we used Limerick Diocesan maps, which marked out the townlands of each parish. However, the dates of these maps are unknown, so it is possible that we have included townlands in some parishes that now rightfully belong to a bounding parish. In many cases, a townland may be part of two or more parishes due to the way that the parish boundaries are defined.

The translation of the townlands into Irish was sourced from 'Contae Luimnigh (1990)', which was edited by Art Ó Maolfabhail. The translation of the townlands of the parishes of Cratloe & Parteen/Meelick were sourced from James Frost’s 'County of Clare – Irish Local Names Explained (1906)'.
It is important to note that different translations are often given in different books for the same townland. For the sake of consistency we took all of our translations from these two main sources.

Some of the following words appear in many of the translations for townlands in each parish and to spare repetition, we include them at this point:

North – Thuaidh
South – Theas
West – Thiar
East – Thoir
Lower – Íochtarach
Upper – Uachtarach
Middle – Láir
Big – Mhór
Small – Bheag
Commons – Coimín
Island – Oileán
Demesne – Diméin

Please note that the translation for 'Rath' is given as 'Rath' throughout this site in accordance with the translations in 'Contae Luimnigh (1990). However, 'Rath' is more commonly translated as 'fort'.
